A Comparative Study on Filters with Special Reference to Retinal Images

چکیده
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading cause of blindness. Digital image processing has been effectively used for the screening, diagonosis and treatment of DR in oreder to lesser the burden of the opthamologist. The use of good quality retinal images is very essential for accurate detection, diagnosis and damage assessment of retina. Non uniform illumination and poor contrast due to the anatomy of fundus image, opaque media, and wide angle optics of the camera, insufficient pupil size, sensory array geometry, and the movement of the eye are the major causes of the low quality retinal images. This paper presents comparisons of four nonlinear de noising techniques namely: median filter, weighted median filter, adaptive median filter and decision based median filter for removal of impulse noise in retinal images. Computational work has been carried out on retinal images garnered from both hospital and publicly available DIARETDB1 dataset. The performance of these de noising filters was evaluate using Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Square Error (MSE). Further, to asses the structural information content in such filtered images, first order entropy is estimated.

Extracting Vessel Centerlines From Retinal Images Using Topographical Properties and Directional Filters
In this paper we consider the problem of blood vessel segmentation in retinal images. After enhancing the retinal image we use green channel of images for segmentation as it provides better discrimination between vessels and background. We consider the negative of retinal green channel image as a topographical surface and extract ridge points on this surface. The points with this property are l...
متن کاملSpeckle Noise Reduction for the Enhancement of Retinal Layers in Optical Coherence Tomography Images
Introduction One of the most important pre-processing steps in optical coherence tomography (OCT) is reducing speckle noise, resulting from multiple scattering of tissues, which degrades the quality of OCT images. Materials and Methods The present study focused on speckle noise reduction and edge detection techniques. Statistical filters with different masks and noise variances were applied on ...
متن کاملFabrication of New 3D Phantom for Measuring Geometric Distortion in Magnetic Resonance Imaging System
Introduction: Geometric distortion is a major shortcoming of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which has an important influence on the accuracy of volumetric measurements, an important parameter in neurology and oncology. Our goal is to design and construct a new three- dimensional phantom using a 3D printer in order to measure geometric distortion and its reproducibility in...
متن کاملDetection of Coastline Using Satellite Image-Processing Technique
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Coasts maintain their natural sustainability without human intervention and in spite of short-term changes, we are ultimately confronted with a coastal healthy environment, i.e. natural, rocky beaches, sandy beaches and so on. Today's use of remote sensing in most natural sciences is widespread. Due to the fact that fieldwork is costly and time-consuming, ...
